The
Etruscans, San Galgano and Montesiepi Private Tour
Starting
from EUR €97 per person
Duration: 8 hours Commences: Siena, Tuscany
Introduction:
Discover Etruscan
life
The day tour begins with the Etruscan
Volterra and the Guarnacci museum, then visit the roofless Abbey
of San Galgano and Montesiepi church. The drive to Volterra
takes you to the western limits of Siena Province through a
particularly beautiful part of this varied landscape. The city
itself was once a center of Etruscan life before the Roman
Empire; some of the original bastions are still intact and
afford views of unique geological formations below called
"le balze". The Guamacci Museum contains one of the
world's finest collections of Etruscan art. Volterra is also
Italy's most important center of alabaster craftsmanship. From
Volterra we will drive to the Cistercian Abbey of San Galgano
(1218) with its roofless church. Perched above the Cistercian
complex is the small scale beehive construction Romanesque
church of Montesiepi dedicated to St. Galgano with the saint's
sword stuck miraculously in a rock and frescoes by Ambrogio
Lorenzetti (1344).
