Join this Medieval tour and visit Siena,
San Gimignano and Monteriggioni, three hilly towns along the
Francigena road. Following the ancient Francigena Way reach
the doors of San Gimignano, one of the most famous medieval
hill towns in Italy. The tour includes walks to the top of the
bastions (and a tower if desired) where exceptional views of
the Tuscan landscape can be admired. A visit to the Church of
St. Fina with its Ghirlandaio frescoes is a must, not to
mention a taste of the local white wine, Vernaccia. And for
ice cream lovers there is a special treat: Dondoli's Ice Cream
Parlor, which has won numerous awards and is thought to be the
best in Europe. On the way to Monteriggioni stop in the town
of Colle Val d'Elsa, the crystal capital of Europe, for a
visit to the best factory. Here crystal blowing and
construction can be seen as well as the company's showroom.
The next stop is Monteriggioni, an entirely walled village
with 14 turrets, built in 1203, where lunch (at own expense)
will be served in the Castello Restaurant. After lunch a brief
walk around this small hamlet will reveal its pristine state.
The tour ends in Siena where the group will visit the famous
Piazza del Campo (where the Palio horse race is run twice a
year on July 2 and August 16), the Town Hall with frescoes by
the Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini, the Duomo and
Castelvecchio, the oldest part of the city.
